In a country with innumerable problems, Skateistan represents an oasis where children can be children and build the kinds of cross-cultural relationships that Afghanistan needs for future stability. Programmer's Note: Former professional snowboarder Orlando von Einsiedel found that the Skateistan project combined two worlds he felt very passionate about: extreme sports and social work. The Skateistan project—started by two Australian aid workers who began giving skating as well as educational lessons to more than 350 kids in Kabul, Afghanistan—equips young men and women with the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development and piqued von Einsiedel's interest enough to make him want to capture it with a camera. Flying directly from Frankfurt to Kabul, von Einsiedel and crew sought to create a more optimistic image of Afghanistan. What resulted is a beautifully composed film that turns a spotlight on neither the battles nor the victims in this war-torn country, but rather on the hopeful spirit and culture of change that the youth of Kabul are yearning to put into action. Ahmed believes that the candle is still burning and she turns her attention to present day Afghanistan, where optimism is flickering and the desire for change is palpable. Reclaiming Rights follows a team of sassy Afghan lawyers who navigate the chaotic streets of Kabul and risk their own safety to defend their clients. Their clients are women and girls in turquoise burqas. For these young women, words like Section 183 of the Constitution or Item Number 12 of the Civil Rights mean little. But from their lawyers perspective, a window has opened. The opportunity to reclaim lost legal rights through courage and education has arrived. Sex, marriage, love and the law are explored as the girls share their stories to seek freedom and justice. What is most surprising is that news seems to travel at triple speed when it is spoken in Farsi. Over the weekend bands from Australia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan performed at a six hour musical festival live in Kabul. From blues, electronic music to heavy metal and rock, for many it was the first time they ever saw bands perform live. At the festival alcohol was banned and kebabs were on sale for those seeking snack food. Twice during the afternoon the electricity was turned off and the bands left the stage as the Muslim worshippers were called to prayer in the nearby mosques. The date and venue of the concert were kept a well guarded secret to prevent Taliban attacks. The festival was held under tight security in a corner of the Babur Gardens and some 450 fans paid to attend the concert with others trickling in from the street markets nearby.

Choreographer Miriam Peretz says the news media too often only shows the "the bad, the ugly and the evil" of Afghanistan, a country that has been engaged in conflict and war, on and off since the 1970s. The dance troupe, Ballet Afsaneh is working to change those perceptions through the arts. Afsaneh means, "mystic story." Their story began when they formed in 1986, but their big push came after the Taliban took power and began to put limits on art and culture. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ballet Afsaneh travels to venues and festivals around the world, performing Ataan, the traditional Afghan dance. Now, these women are taking it upon themselves to break down stereotypes and to keep ancient traditions alive. Here is the world premiere of the Ataan Parwaz - Fly Free. Accompanied by world class masters of Afghan music, Homayun Sakhi and Salar Nader.
