ENGLISH TRANSLATION: At the fireplace (Yiddish Translation) At the fireplace a little fire burns And in the room it's warm. And the Rabbi teaches little children the aleph-bet See you children-dear, remember dear, what you're learning here. Say once again, and then once again, "Komets-alef: o!" Children, learn with happiness, learn the aleph-bet. Lucky is the jew who knows the Torah. and the aleph-bet. Note: At the end of the video are TWO POLISH JEWS paintings. "'Samuel Goldenburg and Schmuyle' were two Polish Jews and were originally the subjects of two separate paintings by Victor Hartman. Mussorgorsky combined the essence of the two paintings into one movement, perhaps to emphasize a rich man/poor man contrast. Samuel Goldenburg, probably large, well dressed and rich, is represented by the first tune in the movement. Schmuyle on the other hand is represented by a piercing, troubled-sounding melody, making him 'appear' to be thin and poor." MUSSOGORSKY : PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION. Mark Warshavsky Mark ...

While emigrating to the United States in 1903 Tuschinski decided to remain in Rotterdam. He found success as a movie theatre owner, opening his first four cinemas in 1911: the Thalia, Cinema Royal, Scala and Olympia. His most luxurious cinema in Rotterdam, the Grand Theater, opened in 1928. His crowning achievement, the Tuschinski Theater, opened its doors in Amsterdam on October 28, 1921. The unique design of this building was a mix of three modern styles: Amsterdamse School, Art Deco and Jugendstil. The elaborate exterior and opulent, richly decorated interior were restored to their former glory in 1998-2002. Tuschinksy also opened another famed Amsterdam cinema, the Roxy Theater, in 1928. When World War II broke out, Tuschinski lost all his cinemas in Rotterdam when the city was bombed by the Germans on May 14, 1940. On July 1, 1942, he was transported to the Westerbork concentration camp in the northeast of the Netherlands, and from there to Auschwitz, where he was killed." Duration : 208 Seconds

My Yiddishe Tate Clarinet. Yiddish Song " Main Tatnz Klarinet" by Yaakov Shapiro. www.myzeidi.com (My Jewish Father's Clarinet)" http ...Yiddish was the everyday language of European Jews for a thousand years. It was also the foundation of a flourishing culture that was almost wiped out in the Holocaust. Yiddish does not thrive in Israel, which adopted Hebrew as its national language and which seems to look upon Yiddishness as old fashioned. Some Israelis, however, struggle to keep Yiddish culture alive. Among them is... Yaacov Shapiro. The distinguishing characteristic of Shapiro's music is its gentleness. His are not the wild dances of klezmer, but folk songs and lullabies..."

It was then known as "Fralach In Swing" and it is this title which appears on early pressings. Later ones use "And The Angels Sing". The musicians are all from the Benny Goodman band of the period as was Ziggy Elman himself and include the complete reed section and Jess Stacy at the piano." In December 1938, Elman was invited to start making some recordings which would be released as "Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra," but, in truth, his musicians were actually all members of the Goodman band. Dray Tekhterlekh - Yiddish song from Cracow
Duration : 247 Seconds

A melancholic song in yiddish, about a father giving away all hes three daughters in marriage.. Written by the late Mordechai Gebirtig, and the sung by the great Bente Kahan. All the pictures are from the US holocaust memorial museum! Translation; 1. When, with good luck, there arrives the day When I marry off my youngest daughter, I will dance and dance A burden has been taken off my mind- My eldest daughter is getting married I have two more maiden daughters waiting for their turn to be married You bandsmen, tear at your strings! Let everyone rejoice with us. My joy is so great. Only the good God can understand how great it is, And so can those who have also given away their daughters in marriage 2. When I see my second daughter getting married in her white wedding dress, I will drink wine with joy - What a burden off my shoulder! You bandsmen - tear at yours strings! My second daughter is getting married. Now it is only my youngest one who remains in the house I wish she would be married soon, too Play, bandsmen play for our in-laws! Let all poor folk share our happiness We are having our child settled down to married life And this child is a daughter, too 3. Now the sounds of a third wedding are dying away And this makes me sad and thoughtful My youngest daughter is gone What else is there for me to be living for? You bandsmen, play for the bride. All three daughters have now been given away in marriage All our children have left us It was hard for us to bring them up ...

( english version of "Der Shtiller Bulgar") terrible times for european jews, but in America yiddish music was heard everywhere. EYDIE GORME.- "Suddenly the setting is strange.....Suddenly I see it all changed" sings Eydie in the 1950s version of the song, arranged by the great Don Costa. But for some unknown reason the Klezmer/ Freylach part at the end was left out. I always felt Eydie should have contacted Ziggy Elman to add that fabulous yiddish music. Now we find Eydie Gorme in a virtual setting, as the female vocalist in the company of two great big bands, Benny Goodman and his Orchestra, and Ziggy Elman and his orchestra. We are back in 1939, with the great Gene Krupa at the drums, the fabulous clarinet playing of Benny Goodman, and the great trumpet of Ziggy Elman. And Eydie singing to a wonderful yiddish melody.
