| | Tenores de Aterúe - Gosos di Santu Gavinu - Sardinian Song Duration : 320 Seconds Tenores de Aterúe is a quartet of Americans who sing traditional Sardinian, Corsican, Italian, and other Mediterranean songs. We are especially infatuated with Sardinian cantu a tenore singing. The singers are Doug Paisley (oche), Gideon Crevoshay (mesu oche), Carl Linich (contra), and Avery Book (bassu). This is a sacred hymn to St. Gavin the Martyr, which we learned from the repertoire of the Tenores di Oniferi. On October 25, 303 AD, Gavin was martyred in Porto Torres, Sardinia, having been tortured under Diocletian for refusing to renounce his Christianity. St. Gavin is the patron saint of the town of Oniferi. Tags :Americans, Sardinian, Aterue, Altrove, cantu, tenore, quartet, Sardinia
| | Canto a tenore, Sardinian Pastoral Songs Duration : 221 Seconds UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Canto a tenore has developed within the pastoral culture of Sardinia. It represents a form of polyphonic singing performed by a group of four men using four different voices called bassu, contra, boche and mesu boche. One of its characteristics is the deep and guttural timbre of the bassu and contra voices. It is performed standing in a close circle. The solo singers chants a piece of prose or a poem while the other voices form an accompanying chorus. Most practitioners live in the region of Barbagia and other parts of central Sardinia. Their art of singing is very much embedded in the daily life of local communities. Often it is performed spontaneously in local bars called su zilleri, but also at more formal occasions, such as weddings, sheepshearings, religious festivities or the Barbaricino carnival. The Canto a tenore encompasses a vast repertoire that varies within Sardinia. The most common melodies are the serenade boche e notte (the voice of the night) and dance songs such as the mutos, gosos and ballos. The lyrics are either ancient or contemporary poems on present-day issues, such as emigration, unemployment and politics. In this sense, the songs can be regarded as both traditional and contemporary cultural expressions. The canto a tenore is especially vulnerable to socio-economic changes, such as the decline of the pastoral culture and the increase ... | | Alghero town, Sardinia, Italy Duration : 141 Seconds ( video 2006, Alghero town, Sardinia, Italy). Alghero (l'Alguer in Catalan and S'Alighèra in Sardinian), is a town of about 42000 inhabitants (down from 54300 inhabitants since early 20th century) in Italy. The area of today's Alghero was settled since pre-historical times. The so-called Ozieri culture was present here in the 4th millennium BCE while the nuraghe civilization was present from around 1500 BC for, and traces of Phoenician buildings have been found not far from the city. Due to his strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea Alghero was born around a fortified port, founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family. The Doria ruled it for centuries, apart from a brief period under the rule of Pisa (1283-1284). In 1353 it was captured by the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera, and could later grow thanks to the arrival of Catalan colonists: in the early 16th century Alghero received the status of King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) and developed economically. The Catalano-Aragonese were followed by Habsburg Spain, whose dominion, ended in 1702, brought some decadence to the city. In 1720 Alghero and Sardinia were handed over to the Piedmont based House of Savoy. Around 1750 a wide channel was excavated to improve the defensive stand of the peninsula. In 1821 famine led to a revolt of the population, which was bloodily suppressed. At the end of the same century Alghero was de-militarized and, during the Fascist era, part of the surrounding marshes was reclaimed and ... Tags :Alghero, Sardinia, l'Alguer, S'Alighèra
