Beginning in the late 1920s and remaining active in her career into the 1970s, Laura Boulton worked as an ethnomusicologist that documented the traditional music of indigenous groups throughout the world. Boulton recorded Native Indians of the Americas on custom-made aluminum discs and published them through Ethnic Folkways. Her work represents some of the earliest recordings of Indians and critics generally suggest that she did so successfully. Individuals like Jesse Walker Fewkes, Alice Fletcher, Natalie Curtis, and Frances Densmore began recording Native Americans during the late nineteenth century into the 1930s before Boulton. The US Library of Congress offers tape cassette recordings of Fletcher and Densmore as well as the work of individuals like William Rhodes that followed Boulton. However, many of the earliest recordings remain in special archives on wax cylinders for academic uses only. Other than the cassettes, Boulton's recordings appear to be the closest thing to a museum piece that a listener can find without visiting a library archive. The website for Smithsonian Folkways offers her recordings of the Navajo, The Eskimos of Hudson Bay and Alaska, and Indian Music of the Southwest. Inserts that include her original descriptions of the songs can also be downloaded at their site.
