This enchanting folk song from the Isle of man was collected in Peel by Mona Douglas and arranged by Fenella Bazin. The women of Peel would sing this song as their men sailed out to the fishing. It is an incantation to the Gods of the Sea to bring the fishermen safely back home again. Si Canta Duo - Catharina Rickett (soprano) & Marianne Asjiki Lihannah (Alto) You can find this beautiful Manx folk song from Fenella Bazin's wonderful book of songs from the Isle of Man, called 'Ree ny Marrey. If I translate the Manx words almost literally it means the following : "When I was a young man, - I had no intention to propose marriage to a young beautiful woman. And now I have a wife and a little infant also..... And Oh boy!, - if only I was a youth again." I have tried to choose photos to help the storyline, particularly in the unison of the verse. When the verse comes back in two parts, the photos are chosen for more musical reasons. Thanks you to Colin Jerry of Peel, Isle of Man, for helping me with this song. There are probably many songs that do not get heard and appreciated for a simple reason, they are not in English. I heard quite a few very good Polish songs but this one has stood out so far from what I have heard. It has be be heard in the Polish language so that the song does not lose its feeling and emotion. Song: Baiht Baiht is an original love song in Manx Gaelic written by band's flute player, Breesha -- its chorus translates: 'I am drowned in your rays/I am full of light/I am at one with the world' Moot is made up of three friends from the Isle of Man, who draw inspiration from the Manx music that they were brought up with; Gaelic songs of fishing and farming, love and loss. Their music does not remain in the folk tradition - not initially a conscious decision - just the result of drawing inspiration from somewhat eclectic record collections. Aalin's 'soaring, jazz-tinged vocals' are complemented by Breesha's mellifluous flute, driven along by Robert's dub-tinged looping soundscapes and random percussion! Moot enjoys performing and meeting musicians from other cultures and has featured at various music festivals such as the Festival Interceltique de Lorient (2002&2003) and the Liet-Lavlut international song contest for minority languages, Sweden (finalists 2006). In 2006, Moot's second CD, Holdfast, appeared. It features original and traditional songs in Manx and English. Moot can also be heard on the compilation of contemporary Manx music The Lighthouse, and on the debut album Uprooted. Set: Our Ship Did Sail/If Young Men Could Swim Two beautifully mellow traditional tunes from the Clague-Gill Collection. Sheear's arrangement gently overlaps the two to haunting effect. Meaning 'West', Sheear is an all girl band made up of musicians and singers who come together in between playing in other bands. Sheear is an opportunity for the girls to explore new ideas and interact with a different kind of ensemble. With each member having a different musical background and coming from the four corners of the Isle of Man (Douglas, Ramsey, Port St. Mary and Peel) the name was chosen to represent the practice venue for the band in Peel. All multi instrumentalists, Sheear's sound is based very much around the piano - a sound not regularly used in Manx music. With three pianists in the group (Cinzia's fingers are too short!) the variety of influences gives a unique and innovative style. Sheear performs a mixture of instrumental and song sets, with songs in both Manx Gaelic and English. Band members include their own compositions -- tunes and songs -- amid traditional Manx material and that from elsewhere. The band is able to offer workshops in fiddle, song, dance and Manx Gaelic. With vocals and less usual traditional instruments Sheear hope to bring a new sound to Manx music and bring new music to the Isle of Man.
