The song takes us for a ride on an old train, on a Karozzin (horse drawn carriage) and to the festivities of Mnarja. At the end, they take us for a drink in a pub. The Greenfields started in 1970 as a Trio. Unfortunately after some years, Charles passed away and Joe and Carmen Tanti continued as a duo and sang many Maltese Folkloristic songs mostly penned by Joe himself. The Greenfields sang along various international stars in open air or indoor concerts held in Malta from time to time. Among these, in cabaret with the international star, Rolf Harris, in shows given by the top Italian TV dancer Don Lurio, the British pop group, The Brotherhood of Men, Italian singer Carmen Villani and the folk group The McCalmans. They were also the only supporting act for Raffaella Carra', the Italian showgirl's four shows in Malta and Gozo in May 1977, and for the internationally acclaimed vocal group The Platters during their shows in Malta in January 1978. The Greenfields have also taken part in many song festivals and contests both in Malta and abroad and were among the winners in a good majority of them. Early in 193I, a group of musicians travelled from the port of Valletta, Malta, to Tunis, to record the very first records of Maltese music. What ensued was a social phenomenon, which took much of society by storm. This is the forgotten story of recording Maltese, folk and popular music in the interwar period. A 60 page book with 30 tracks is now available. It's an intriguing account of musicians, composers, poets and songwriters who, contracted by the Valletta music agents, were sent to Milan and Tunis to record on the major record labels of the day, including HMV, Polyphon, Odeon and Pathé Records. Recorded music and gramophones became an attractive novelty, which played back local music and altered the Maltese people's perception of themselves forever. These old songs have now been restored. The music of this beautiful song was composed by the late Carmelo Zammit, lyrics by Carmen Dimech and was sung by Gillian Attard. Carmelo and Carmen teamed up and created some very beautiful Maltese songs including this one and "Ma nichdek qatt". Please click here to view: www.youtube.com Gillian Attard originally sang this song when she was 8 years old and won first price. The version you hear is a recording she did later when she grew up. In 1994 Gillian released her first album, entitled "Messaġġ ta' Mħabba" (Message of Love) that included fourteen tracks, thirteen of which were in Maltese, her native tongue. The singer started her singing career at a very young age. Unluckily for her, she lost her mother very early in her childhood. This song was written in memory of her Mom. It became and still is a very popular song especially amongst the Maltese. Today Gillian continues to sing, produces TV shows and is a voice coaching teacher for students. BRIEFLY: The song deals with a little girl who speaks of how happy their family was, going to school, returning home for a nice meal, welcoming dad from work and playing happily with her brothers and sisters when all of a sudden, a storm hit the family and her parents separated. Rajt ma rajtx - Smajt ma smajtx Imhabba f'Kemmuna It-Tieg tan-Neputija A medley of three Maltese songs sung by the popular singers Tony Camilleri (l-Ghannej) and Frank O'Neill accompanied by the great orchestra of Joe Brown. 1st song by Tony Camilleri is "Rajt ma rajtx; smajt ma smajtx" - (Saw but didn't see - heard but didn't hear). We find many crosses on columns around Malta. They were used as a meeting place. First song is about one of these crosses found near Birkirkara, Malta. It is said that in this neighborhook, a man had some serious arguments with another man and pulled out a knife and tried to kill him but the 2nd man ran away. The would be killer ran to try to find him but couldn't. He saw another man and asked him if he saw someone running. This guy told him he saw someone running into an alley. The angry man went in and killed that guy. So this cross which happened to be in that neighborhood was called "Rajt ma rajtx; smajt ma smajtx" - (Saw but didn't see - heard but didn't hear). This cross is about 300 years old. 2nd song by Frank O'Neill is "Imhabba f'Kemmuna" - Love in Comino. Comino is a tiny island between Malta and Gozo. 3rd song by Tony Camilleri is called "It-Tieg tan-Neputija" - The wedding of my niece, and the singer talks about the bride showing off her lace, drinking too much, jumping and finally circled by guests and asked to kiss the groom. Malta Song For Europe 2008 is a music show in which Malta selects its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, to be held in Belgrade, Serbia. After some date changes due to General Elections due to be held end-February or beginning-March, the Maltasong board now announced the dates of 24th and 26th January to be the dates for the Semi-final and the final of the song contest. For the second time running, MFCC (Malta Fairs and Convention Center) will host the Malta Song For Europe, though contrary to last years' 10000 seats, this year the venue is expected to be reduced to 1000 seats. After the two bad results Malta achieved in 2006 and 2007 in the Eurovision Song Contest, some changes were done to the regulations by the MaltaSong board. Long discussions took place with UKAM (Maltese union to represent musicians) for the final regulations to be signed. 225 (Two hundred and twenty-five) songs were submitted to compete in the first phase, which is judged behind closed doors. From the first phase only 36 songs made it through, judged by international jury between the 19th and the 21st of November 2007. Hosting this year's edition will be: John Demanuele accompanied by Ruth Casingena and Chiara The second phase is due to take place on the 9th January, then we'll know who the semifinalists are for the 24th of January.
