Gaelic Song :The St Kildans Song (Oran na Hiortaich)
Duration : 120 Seconds

thescotsman.scotsman.com Minimalist approch this time round just to post this song. There is a video of some film taken some hundred years ago "A large rowing boat approaches the quay on the Island of St Kilda. Men on the quay watch the boat and throw down a line to tie up the boat. Dogs run around while the fishermen unload their fish. Landing on the Bird Rock, a man is seen swinging round a rocky crag on a rope, while below a small rowing boat bobs on the waves. Another man is seen climbing, with some difficulty, from the boat onto the rock face. Two men on rocky cliff path pose beside their snares and a small pile of birds. Fulmar Petrels are shown nesting on the cliff face and in flight wheeling round the rocks. A Fulmar is shown in its nest, a Fulmar chick on the ground. A title indicates that young fulmars are a staple diet of the St Kildans, and a bird 'snarer' is shown descending a cliff in search of the young birds. He is lowered down the cliff by rope and later holds a pole and snare with a bird attached by its wings; he shows it to the camera. A colony of guillemots and herring gulls are shown in the Bay of St. Kilda, both on the rocks and circling in the air." Greenpeace members would no doubt have an apoplectic fit, but that was how they lived! .

Gaelic Song: Christine Primrose singing 'Mo Cheist Am Fear Ban' (My Darling Is the Fair One)
Duration : 269 Seconds

Posted by Temple Records: From the 25th January, this song will be available as a digital download only single, direct from www.templerecords.co.uk & all the major online music download retailers. Congratulations to Christine Primrose, who won a well deserved award for 'Gaelic Singer of the Year' at the Scots Traditional Music Awards in November 2009. Christine is a great singer, and a trailblazer, who has been singing traditional Gaelic song all her life, and who has played a pivotal role in a revival of interest in Gaelic song that has swept far beyond Scotland. With a voice that is clear, pure and dignified, she has forged a path that many singers have followed, from Arthur Cormack to Karen Matheson of Capercaillie and Cape Bretons Mary Jane Lamond to another fine Lewis singer Catriona Watt. Christine delivers all the emotions of the songs through two very simple things; the voice and the word. She has rightly become a highly regarded and sought after tutor & artist, who has been vital in introducing the music to a wider non-Gaelic speaking audience and it's excellent to see her receiving this recognition for her achievements. Originally from Carloway, a village on the west side of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Christine is a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic. Her first album, 'Àite mo Ghaoil', (Place of My Heart)was released on Temple Records in 1982 - at a time when traditional Gaelic singing was not widely known or appreciated - and this recording broke ...

Gaelic Song: Murdo Ferguson sings "Mairi Nighean Alasdair"
Duration : 202 Seconds

Murdo Ferguson, founder of Gaelfonn Records, singing a famous Lewis song. When Mary Mackenzie (Mairi Nighean Alisdair) died , her widowed husband William MacKenzie (1856 - 1908) went to join his only remaining family who had all left for Canada but he died within a year of arriving in Canada and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Thunder Bay. Before leaving Lewis he pulled out one of his teeth and buried it with his wife so at least part of him remained there. William also composed many other Gaelic songs and poems.

Celtic Music Gaelic song An cluin thu mi mo nighean donn Charlie Macleod
Duration : 229 Seconds

Charles Macleod singing An cluin thu mi mo nighean donn a Gaelic song. With some pictures of fishing, Harris tweed and the co-op van. My dads uncle in the photos worked for the co-op on the Isle of Barra for years and then Lewis Kenny Piper Macleod. My grandfather had a Harris tweed mill on the Island of Lewis and the photos remind me of that time. They bring back the smells and the sounds of making Harris tweed from the fleece. I remember him warping and singing Gaelic songs to me and of course rise and follow Charlie. Good times :o) Charles Macleod

Gaelic song w/ Lyrics - Inis Dhún Rámha
Duration : 151 Seconds

'Inis Dhún Rámha', sung by Maria McCool. Lyrics Translation: King of the universe, that we're not in Iorras Or over in Inis Dhún Rámha On the banks of the Finn, close by the waves Watching big ships go sailing the ocean Though weary and tired with no one to cheer us But the leafy branches to shade us And people would fondly compare our going To the elopment of Diarmad and Gráinne Last night she appeared to me in my dreaming Like I held her in the fold of my arm This maiden so comely like a blanket of snow If it were to refrain from thawing Pride of mankind were she by my side As bed-pal without any dowry Her honey-sweet lips would sure my affliction And ensure my sick body's recovery If I were a baron, I wouldn't be craving For horses or kine as a dowry If I had this maiden to sit down beside me Or stand there so stately and cheery The sheen in her skin is far more endearing Than the rays of the sun at the dawning It's no lie to relate, but the truth here I state That she is the fairest of maidens
