The Sky is the Clock
History is often written by those who hold power, but the sky preserves a record that cannot be altered.
For more than two centuries, the history of Indian civilization was compressed into a narrow timeline by colonial-era scholarship. According to this framework, the Vedas were believed to have been composed around 1500 BCE by migrating pastoral groups.
However, many ancient Indian texts are not merely philosophical compositions—they also contain astronomical observations. When a text describes the position of stars, the alignment of planets, or the occurrence of an equinox within a particular Nakshatra, it provides a celestial marker. Unlike historical narratives, such astronomical references can be analyzed mathematically.
Modern tools such as planetarium software allow researchers to reconstruct the night sky thousands of years into the past. This field—Archaeo-Astronomy—has opened new possibilities for examining the chronological context of ancient texts.
